This unit is about planning and supervising the performance of the team and developing team cohesion. It applies to team leaders, supervisors and new emerging managers who have an important leadership role in the development of efficient and effective work teams. Leaders at this level also give leadership for the team and bridge the gap between the management of the organization and team members. As such they must 'manage up' as well as manage their team/s.

Practical

You will be assessed in the workplace as a safe environment. You will need to demonstrate consistent performance of typical activities as a manager. You will need access to:

  1. information about your organization, including your organization’s structure, goals, objectives and plans.
  2. case studies, and where possible, real situations.
  3. workplace equipment and resources.
  4. interaction with others.

You will need to show that you can:

  1. Apply knowledge of your organization’s goals, objectives and plans.
  2. Develop a teamwork plan including documentation of how it was generated and how it will be monitored.
  3. Identify and incorporate innovation and productivity measures into a team work plan.
  4. Communicate with team members and management to identify and establish the team purpose, roles, responsibilities, goals, plans and objectives and resolve problems.
  5. Consult, encourage, support and give feedback to team members.
  6. Model team leadership behaviors and approaches.
  7. Liaise with management to develop the teamwork plan, resolve issues and ensure follow-up action is taken.

  1. Lead the team to identify, establish and document team purpose, roles, responsibilities, goals, plans and objectives in consultation with team members.
  2. Engage team members to incorporate innovation and productivity measures in work plans.
  3. Lead and support team members in meeting expected outcomes.

2. Lead team to develop cohesion.

  1. Give opportunities team members to give input into planning, decision making and operational aspects of the team.
  2. Encourage and support team members to take responsibility for their work and to help each other in their roles and responsibilities.
  3. Give feedback to team members to encourage, value and reward their individual and team efforts and contributions.
  4. Recognize and address issues, concerns and problems identified by team members or refer to relevant persons as required.
  5. Model expected behaviors and approaches.

3. Participate in and facilitate work team.

  1. Actively encourage team members to participate in and take responsibility for team activities and communication.
  2. Help the team to identify and resolve problems that impede its performance.
