This unit is about leading organizations through periods of change. It includes influencing and shaping an organizational culture that embraces the opportunities for change, anticipating change, and giving strategic leadership during change. You will need to be able to generate ideas and solve complex problems.

Note: Except in a crisis, where people accept radical change very quickly, the process of organizational change in a major corporation often takes several years.

You will be assessed in the workplace. It must be a safe environment, and you will need to show consistent performance as a manager and leader. You will need access to:

  1. relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes.
  2. organizational and industry information and data.
  3. workplace documents including examples of strategic planning documents.
  4. case studies and, where available, real situations.
  5. Interactions with others.

You need to show that you have planned and implemented a change management strategy for your organization. It must include:

  1. A strategic review of organizational culture in an organization and develop a vision for the future.
  2. Researching and anticipating the likelihood of change for the organization.
  3. Identifing, supporting and promoting the advantages of change to stakeholders by communicating, setting an example, celebrating success.
  4. Embedding change management into organizational policies, procedures and practices including recruitment, training, procurement and resourcing.
  5. Implementing and monitoring change management in a continuous improvement cycle.

Detailed requirements

1. Influence organizational culture. El 1/PC, RS

  1. Do a strategic review of organizational culture to find out existing attitudes to change, and identify the main issues for action.
  2. Identify, support and actively promote the strategic advantages of ongoing change for individuals, groups and the organization to foster commitment to workplace change.
  3. Embed the acceptance of new ideas and management methods and challenges into existing practices and structures in managerial practice and decision making.
  4. Embed change management activities and related performance indicators for managers in organizational strategies, policies and plans as an ongoing requirement.
  5. Recruit, develop and deploy staff with a range of attributes that are reflective of a diverse workforce to maximize the organization’s strategic advantage in dealing with change.
  6. Embed learning and development opportunities for managing change in induction and professional development.

 

2. Anticipate change. El 2/PC, RS

  1. Identify the likelihood of significant change for the organization through strategic networking and ongoing consideration of factors impacting upon the community, the industry, the organization or within the external environment.
  2. Consult key stakeholders in identifying external drivers for change, and analyze likely change in relation to its potential effect on organizational purpose, functions, structure, strategic objectives and the people in the organization.
  3. Do early planning with managers, human resource personnel and staff to ensure:
    1. you have maximum lead time and support for those likely to be affected by change, and
    2. to allow thoughtful, proactive responses to be generated.
  4. Anticipate and plan for resourcing challenges of both implementing and sustaining change according to organizational policies, procedures guidelines and legislative requirements.

 

3. Give strategic leadership in change management. El 3/PC, RS

  1. Formulate strategic priorities in consultation with key stakeholders in the organization and the community, and set out a vision for the future that gives challenging but realistic objectives to address change and maximize outcomes.
  2. Research and use current best practice information on change management to manage change effectively to get sustained positive results.
  3. Leader and help others to deal with ambiguity and to be creative and innovative in dealing with change.
  4. Design strategies to address the transition from present to future arrangements and give guidance for dealing with ambiguous roles, functions, organizational priorities or structures.
  5. Monitor organizational culture, business outcomes and client feedback, and identify and celebrate positive achievements according to organizational policy.

Note: At the end of the change process, you will probably already be able to anticipate the next wave of changes.
