BSBMGT401 Show leadership in the workplace
This unit is about leading teams and individuals by setting an example of high standards of conduct to reflect the organization’s standards and values.
It applies to individuals who are making the transition from being a team member to taking responsibility for the work and performance of others and providing the first level of leadership within the organization. These managers have a strong influence on the work culture, values and ethics of the teams they supervise.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation on the job
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical
You will be assessed in the workplace as a safe environment. You will need include access to:

Perform consistently in typical activities in this field of competency.
1. Model high standards of management performance and behavior.
- Identify the organization’s standards and values, whether stated or implied by the way the organization conducts its business.
- Ensure your performance and behavior meets the organization’s requirements.
- In your performance and behavior, be a positive role model for others.
- Develop and implement performance plans according to your organization’s goals and objectives.
- Establish and use key performance indicators to meet your organization’s goals and objectives.
- Evaluate own behavior and performance against these and adjust to achieve required standards.
- Develop and implement performance plans and key performance indicators (KPIs) to meet organization’s goals and objectives.
2. Enhance organization’s image.
- Use organization’s standards and values in conducting business.
- Ensure your behavior and performance contributes to the integrity and credibility of the organization.
- Ensure personal performance contributes to developing an organization that has integrity and credibility.
- Use established communication channels to raise questions about standards and values that could damage the organization.
3. Make informed decisions.
- Gather and organize information relevant to the issue/s under consideration.
- Help individuals and the team to actively participate in making decisions.
- Examine options and assess associated risks to determine preferred course/s of action.
- Make decisions on time. Avoid the negative consequences of indecision or late decisions.
- Communicate decisions clearly to individuals and to the team.
- Prepare plans to implement decisions and check that relevant individuals and teams agree to them.
