BSBMGT516 Facilitate continuous improvement
This unit is about leading and managing continuous improvement systems. It emphasizes the development of systems and the analysis of information to monitor and adjust performance strategies, and to manage opportunities for further improvements. Generally speaking, your role is not to make improvements but to establish processess to ensure that others implement a successful system of continuous improvement.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation on the job
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical
You will be assessed in a real situation on the job. It must be a safe environment with access to relevant workplace documentation and resources, and interaction with others.
Show the assessor your systems and processes for continuous improvement. They need to:
- facilitate effective contributions to and communications about continuous improvement processes and outcomes.
- address sustainability requirements.
- incorporate mentoring, coaching and other support to enable people to participate effectively.
- capture insights, experiences and ideas for improvements and incorporate them into your organiszation’s knowledge management system and future planning.

- Explain how your systems and procedures support effective continuous improvement.
- Explain how continuous improvement systems and processes relate to other business systems and requirements including, knowledge management, quality, performance management and sustainability.

Perform consistently in typical activities in this field of competency.
1. Lead continuous improvement systems and processes.
- Develop systems to actively encourage and support team members to participate in making decisions, assuming responsibility and exercising initiative (as appropriate).
- Establish systems to ensure that your organization’s continuous improvement processes are communicated to stakeholders.
- Check that change and improvement processes meet sustainability requirements.
- Develop effective mentoring and coaching so that individuals and teams can implement and support the organization’s continuous improvement system.
- Ensure that you system captures insights and experiences from business activities and makes them accessible in a knowledge management system.
2. Monitor and adjust your performance strategies.
- Develop strategies to ensure that systems and processes are used to monitor operational progress and to identify ways in which planning and operations could be improved.
- Adjust your strategies and communicate the changes to stakeholders according to organizational procedures.
3. Manage opportunities for further improvement.
- Establish processes to ensure that team members are informed of outcomes of continuous improvement efforts.
- Ensure processes include recording of work team performance to assist in identifying further opportunities for improvement.
- Consider areas identified for further improvement when undertaking future planning.
