BSBPMG522 Undertake project work
This unit is about managing a straightforward project or a section of a larger project. It covers developing a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project and reviewing the project to identify lessons learned for application to future projects.
This unit applies to individuals who play a significant role in ensuring a project meets timelines, quality standards, budgetary limits and other requirements set for the project. The unit does not apply to specialist project managers, for which other units are applicable.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation on the job
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical
You will be assessed in the workplace as a safe environment. You must demonstrate consistent performance of typical activities in the role of project management. You will need access to:
- relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes
- relevant workplace documentation and resources
- case studies and, where possible, real situations
- interaction with others.
You need to show that you have:
- Defined the parameters of the project including:
- project scope
- project stakeholders, including your responsibilities
- relationship of project to organisational objectives and other projects
- reporting requirements
- resource requirements
- Used project management tools to develop and implement a project plan including:
- deliverables
- work breakdown
- budget and allocation of resources
- timelines
- risk management
- recordkeeping and reporting
- Consulted and communicated with relevant stakeholders to generate input and engagement in planning, implementing and reviewing the project
- Supported team members so they can achieve deliverables and to transition them as appropriate at completion of the project
- Finalized the project, including documentation, sign-offs and reporting
- Reviewed and documented the project outcomes.

Detailed requirements
1. Define the project
- Access project scope and other relevant documentation
- Define project stakeholders
- Ask your delegating authority to clarify issues related to project and project parameters
- Identify limits of your responsibility
- Identify your reporting requirements
- Clarify the relationship of project to other projects and to your organisation's objectives
- Determine and access available resources to do the project
2. Develop project plan
- Develop a project plan in line with the project parameters
- Identify appropriate project management tools and access them
- Develop a risk management plan for the project. It needs to include Work Health and Safety risks.
- Develop a budget for the project and get it approved
- Consult your team members and consider their views in planning the project
- Finalise the project plan and get any necessary approvals so that you can start the project according to the written plan
3. Administer and monitor project
- Make sure the project team members are clear about their responsibilities and the project requirements
- Provide support for project team members, especially with regard to specific needs, to ensure that the quality of the expected outcomes of the project and documented time lines are met

- Establish and maintain required recordkeeping systems throughout the project
- Implement and monitor plans for managing project finances, resources and quality
- Complete project reports and forward the to stakeholders, as required

4. Finalise the project
- Do the financial recordkeeping for the project and check it for accuracy. You should also do an acquittal statement if required.
- Transition your project staff into new roles or reassign them to previous roles
- Complete project documentation and get any necessary sign-offs for concluding the project
5. Review the project
- Review the outcomes and processes of the project against the project scope and plan
- Involve your team members in the project review
- Document lessons learned from the project and report them within your organisation
