BSBWHS401 Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs to meet legislative requirements.
This unit is about the supervisors role in implementing and monitoring an organization’s work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and programs in the work area in order to meet legislative requirements.

- Review of your workplace documents
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical
You will be assessed in the workplace as a safe environment. You will need to demonstrate consistent performance of typical WHS activities. You will need interaction with others, workplace equipment and resources, examples of documents relating to workplace safety, hazard identification and risk assessment.
You will need to show that you can:
- Explain clearly and accurately to team the relevant work health and safety (WHS) information including:
- WHS legislative and your organization’s requirements.
- identified hazards and outcomes of risk assessment and control.
- Ensure that the team has access to information about WHS policies, procedures and programs in appropriate structure and language.
- Implement and monitor procedures according to your organization’s and legislative WHS requirements including:
- Consultation and communications to enable team members to participate in managing WHS risks and hazards.
- Identifying WHS training needs and providing learning opportunities, coaching and mentoring as appropriate to needs.
- Identifying, reporting and taking action on WHS hazards and risks.
- Identifying and reporting inadequacies in existing risk controls and monitoring outcomes to ensure a prompt organizational response.
- Reporting on the cost of WHS training.
- Keeping WHS records.
- Analyzing aggregate WHS data to identify hazards and monitor risk control procedures in work area.
Assignment/interview questions
- Outline the legal responsibilities and duties of managers, supervisors, persons conducting businesses or undertakings (PCBUs) and workers in relation to WHS risk management in the workplace.
- Identify key provisions of relevant WHS Acts, regulations and codes of practice that apply to the business and outline how they apply in the work area.
- Explain your organization’s policies and procedures relating to hazard identification, risk management, fire, emergency and evacuation, incident investigation and reporting.
- Explain the importance of effective consultation mechanisms in managing health and safety risks in the workplace.

Detailed requirements
Note: In this unit, you are required to comply with your organization’s WHS requirements and WHS legislative and regulatory requirements.
1. Inform the team about WHS policies and procedures.
- Accurately explain to the team relevant provisions of WHS Acts, regulations and codes of practice.
- Inform them about your organization’s WHS policies, procedures and programs, and ensure the team has ready access to it and understands it.
- Regularly inform and clearly explain identified hazards and the outcomes of risk assessment and control.
2. Implement and monitor participation arrangements for managing WHS.
- Inform workplace parties about the importance of effective consultation in managing health and safety risks in the workplace.
- Apply consultation procedures to facilitate participation of the team in managing work area hazards.
- Promptly deal with issues raised through consultation.
- Promptly record and communicate to the team the outcomes of consultation over WHS issues.
3. Implement and monitor your organization’s procedures for giving WHS training.
- Identify WHS training needs.
- Make arrangements to meet WHS training needs of team members in consultation with relevant individuals.
- Give workplace learning opportunities, and coaching and mentoring so that the team and individuals can achieve identified WHS training needs.
- Identify and report to management the costs of providing training for the team, for inclusion in financial and management plans.
4. Identify hazards, and assess and control risks.
- Implement and monitor your organization’s procedures and legal requirements for identifying hazards and managing risks.
- Identify and report on hazards in work area.
- Promptly act on team member hazard reports.
- Implement procedures to control risks using the hierarchy of control.
- Identify and report inadequacies in existing risk controls according to hierarchy of control.

- Accurately complete and maintain WHS records of incidents of occupational injury and disease in work area.
- Use aggregate information and data from work area records to identify hazards and monitor risk control procedures in work area.
