CHCAOD007 Develop strategies for alcohol and other drugs relapse prevention and management
This unit is about collaborating with alcohol and/or drug (AOD) clients to:
- develop strategies for preventing relapse
- manage relapse, should it occur
- deal with potentially harmful behavior.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation on the job
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical
You will be assessed in the workplace in industry conditions where you will need:
- the use of suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including risk assessment tools/forms, client treatment plans, and your organization’s policies and procedures
- involvement of people with whom the candidate can interact
- scenarios that cater to a range of settings, including crisis situations
You need to show that you have done the following:
- Held a relapse planning session with at least two clients with alcohol and/or drug issues that incorporate supporting clients with:
- solving problem
- setting goals
- coping
- self monitoring and management
- recognizing and managing cravings
- cognitive restructuring
- harm minimization
- Communicated effectively with:
- empathy
- open questioning
- reflective listening and
- summarizing.

Detailed requirements
1. Explore relapse prevention
- Review client information to inform your relapse prevention strategy
- Prepare the client for the possibility of relapse as a common experience
- Find out any previous relapse prevention strategies that the client has used in the past
- In consultation with the client, determine what stakeholders need to be included in the relapse prevention process
2. Identify potential risks
- With the client, identify and discuss potential relapse triggers
- Determine what environmental factors could contribute to client responses
- Identify circumstances that could cause potentially harmful behavior to client and others
- Assess risks in conjunction with the client (Follow your organization’s protocols)
3. Develop relapse prevention and management strategies
- Research and evaluate a range of support strategies, and identify the most suitable to meet the client’s needs
- Work with the client in a way that promotes their participation and respects their insights and experiences
- Work collaboratively with client to:
- select most appropriate relapse prevention strategies
- decide on relapse management strategies
- decide on contingency plans if difficulties are encountered, including harm minimization
4. Report and document information
- Accurately record strategies in the client’s individual treatment plan (Follow your organization’s protocols)
- Follow privacy and confidentiality requirements when reporting feedback.
5. Other.
- Manage tasks and contingencies on the job.
