CHCCCS009 Facilitate responsible behaviour
This unit is about monitoring individuals, responding to behaviours of concern, dealing with conflict, and getting them to be responsible for managing and changing their behaviour. It applies to workers who work directly with people in a range of community service contexts.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation on the job
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures, incident reports)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical

You will be assessed in the workplace with interactions with people with a range of needs, typical workplace reporting processes, and links to other services.
You need to show that you have:
- Recognised and responded to at least three different situations of concerning behaviour.
- Communicated effectively in at least one conflict situation by:
- engaging positively and supportively
- negotiating and solving problems
- been an example of assertive behaviour.

- Each of the legal and ethical considerations below relate to the way you might address concerning behaviours. Explain how each one is applied in your organization and in individual practice:
- duty of care
- individual rights and equality
- constraint
- imprisonment
- abuse.
- Describe the five most common concerning behaviors of your organization’s clients. For each one, describe the most common underlying reasons and the most appropriate ways to respond.
- In your client population and their environment, what cultural practices and customs affect behaviour that might couase concern?
- Describe the main principles for communicating effectively when managing conflict.
- Describe the main principles for responding to human behaviour that is:
- violent,
- aggressive,
- and suicidal.
- What are your organization’s reporting procedures for incidents and accidents? If there is a report form, show your assessor.
- What are your organization’s procedures for managing critical incidents, both at the time of the incident and afterwards?
- What are the guidelines for the kind of language used in incident reports?
- What specific statutory requirements relate to the treatment of people with special needs and requiring special support?
- What options do you have if you need to refer someone to somone else for help (e.g. specialist services)?

Detailed requirements
1. Observe individuals El 1/PC, RS O,In
- Observe and monitor individuals using formal and informal methods.
- Recognise situations of potential conflict and identify appropriate preventative and defusing strategies that your could use.
- Evaluate the person’s behaviour and interactions in fairly, objectively, and consistently.
- Check that your decisions to act are consistent with available evidence and your organization’s policies.
- Ask for specialist advice and make necessary referrals.
2. Manage conflict El 2/PC, RS O,In
- Be fair, just, humane, equitable and positive when interactions with individuals.
- Communicate with individuals for effective interaction and problem solving.
- Consider different cultural sensitivities (e.g. cultural values and practices) and adapt your style and language to accommodate them.
- Identify potential causes of conflict and use various appropriate and effective defusing responses.
- Use negotiation to:
- divert and minimize aggressive behaviour
- examine cause and effect and encourage people to be responsible and accountable for their behaviour and its effects.
3. Respond to concerning behaviours. El 3/PC, RS O,In
- Challenge concerning behaviours and clearly outline options and opportunities to change with positive encouragement.
- Use clear, calm and objective language to confirm the implications of continuing behaviours of concern.
- Follow procedures to ensure personal safety of yourself, the individual, colleagues, and others.
- Select strategies and responses for their potential to give role models and examples of confident, assertive behaviour.
- Base your interventions on an analysis of the situation and your organization’s policies and procedures.
4. Complete reporting requirements El 4/PC, RS O,In,W
- Report incidents in in compliance with policy, procedures and legislation.
- Prepare reports and other documentation according to your organization’s requirements.
- Update your documentation and keep it current.
