This unit is about taking a leadership role in providing quality case management. This includes disseminating information and giving advice on issues of case management practice in your organization.
At this level, you’ll be autonomous and be responsible for your own outputs within broad but defined organization guidelines.
How you will be assessed

You will be assessed on the job under industry operating conditions:
- suitable facilities, equipment and resources, including individualized case plans
- links to other local service agencies or organizations
- interactions with case workers.
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures and case management notes)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
You must have led and advised at least two case workers on a complex case. This includes:
- giving direction, support, recommendations and advice
- promoting best practice
- monitoring case progress

Unit requirements
1. Develop and promote practice standards. El 1/PC, RS
- Develop standards of practice and promote them to workers.
- Identify strategies for continuous improvement of case management practice and integrate them into work systems.
- Put staff development plans in place and give staff training so that they remain current with accepted best practice and relevant legislation.
- Collaborate with staff to develop their individual reflective skills and strategies for ethical practice.
2. Support and lead colleagues in case management practice. El 2/PC, RS
- Give support, practice advice and direction. It should be consistent with your organization’s services and professional standards.
- Challenge staff and support them to make sure casework plans and actions are:
- up to date,
- evidence based and
- follow organization procedures and legislative requirements.
- Give staff access to casework consultation with other workers to be as effective as possible
- Give staff access to, and consultation with, culturally specific workers
- Access and apply specialist practice knowledge in the workplace and supervise staff to achieve their case work objectives
- Advise staff on the full range of relevant legislation to case management, and the responsibilities of both staff and the organization.
3. Supervise case managers El 3/PC, RS
- Routinely monitor staff members’ progress on case plans. If necessary, recommend changes, to improve outcomes and the quality of service delivery.
- Assess their case management plans and give them feedback and advice on options for further improvement and implementation.
- Advise staff on your organization’s processes to collect information from key stakeholders that contributes to continuous improvement.
- Update staff on changes to legislation, policy and organization procedures.
4. Give practice advice on complex cases. El 4/PC, RS
- If cases are too complex for your staff, give them advice on what to do.
- Do some consultation to get information and create options for future action. (Your organization should have a strategy for consulting stakeholders, including specialists.)
- If a case is beyond your role or abilities, refer it to a more senior or specialist role. (Follow your organization’s requirements.)
5. Reflect and improve on own supervision provision. El 5/PC, RS
- Evaluate your supervision in consultation with peers and senior colleagues.
- Identify areas for improvement and opportunities for development.
