CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
This unit is about working respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Diary or session notes of your reflections
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical
CA, RE
You will be assessed on the job under industry operating conditions. You need to show that you have recognized and respected the needs of people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds in at least three different situations. This includes selecting and using appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication. It also includes recognizing situations where misunderstandings might arise from diversity and forming appropriate responses.
Systematic reflection
Regularly reflect on diversity-related incidents. For each incident, say what happened, why, and what can you learn from it. Your assessor will choose one of the following approaches:Id
- Keep a diary and hand in to your assessor each week during the assessment period.
- Participate in a weekly session (e.g. training session or staff meeting) during the assessment period, and make notes.

- Explain the concepts of:
- cultural awareness
- cultural safety
- cultural competence.
- How do these affect work roles in community services? Describe the implications.
- How do these affect your work role?
- How do these affect your colleagues’ various work roles?
- What is cultural diversity? What other kinds of diversity often appear in workplaces? (race, religion, etc.)
- Consider the community attitudes, language, policies and structures of your culture. Describe their affects on the most common non-mainstream people and groups in your community.
- What are the main influences and practices in Australia that affect non-mainstream communities in Australian society?
- Describe the characteristics of each of the following key areas of diversity in Australia:
- culture / language
- race / ethnicity
- socioeconomic grouping
- political views
- disability
- religious or spiritual beliefs
- gender
- generational culture
- sexual orientation or identity: lesbian, gay, bisexual, heterosexual, transgender, and intersex.
- How do they affect different areas of work and life?
- Describe the potential needs of marginalised groups, including:
- protective factors.
- physical health issues/care needs.
- mental and emotional health issues/care needs.
- What are the effects of discrimination, trauma, exclusion and negative attitudes?
- Describe each of these resources that support individuals and organizations to embrace and respond to diversity.

Indigenous peoples
(Australian Indigenous peoples are also called Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders.)
- Describe the social, political and economic issues affecting Indigenous people.
- Describe the aspect of your own culture, and western systems and structures that affect Indigenous people?
- How do these affect on Indigenous people and their engagement with community services?
- Describe some general differences between major groups of Indigenous cultures.
Legal and ethical
- What legal and ethical considerations (international, national, state/territory, local) apply to working with diversity? In your answer, consider discrimination based on age, disability, race, or gender
- Human rights
- What rights do people have under the Universal declaration of human rights that affect community services?
- How do these affect individual workers?
- What are the consequences of breaches?
- Describe the relationship between human needs and human rights.
- What human rights frameworks are used in the workplace? (Consider also overall approaches and specific instruments.)
- In your organizaion, what are the rights and responsibilities of workers, employers and clients?
- What is the appropriate action when rights are being infringed or responsibilities not being carried out?

- Identify and reflect on your own social and cultural perspectives and biases.
- Work with awareness of your own limitations and of your social awareness.
- Reflect on your own abilities so that you work inclusively and with an understanding of others.
- Identify ways to improve yourself and your social awareness, and act on them.

- Value and respect diversity and inclusiveness across all areas of your work.
- Help to develop workplace and professional relationships based on appreciation of diversity and inclusiveness.
- Make environments safe for everybody.
3. Communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and situations. El/PC, RS 2, O, In
- Show respect for diversity when communicating with everybody.
- Use verbal and non-verbal communication constructively to establish, develop and maintain effective relationships, mutual trust and confidence.
- If you face a language barrier, communicate as efficiently and effectively as possible (e.g. simple language, signs).
- Ask for help from an interpreter or someone else if necessary.

- Identify any issues that could cause communication misunderstandings or other difficulties.
- Where you have difficulties or misunderstandings, consider the impact of social and cultural diversity.
- Try to resolve differences sensitively, taking account of diversity considerations.
- Address any difficulties with people and ask for help if you need it.
