CHCDIV003 Manage and promote diversity
This unit is about evaluating and promoting diversity in the workplace, and contributing to planning diversity policies and procedures.
How you will be assessed
CA
You will be assessed on the job in a leadership role with interactions with other people.
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures and case management notes)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical

- In at least one workplace, research current diversity performance and the extent it meets diversity objectives
- Use strategies to foster and promote diversity in work practice:

- Help develop workplace diversity policies and procedures for at least one workplace.
Interview/Assignment

- Explain the concepts of:
- cultural awareness
- cultural safety
- cultural competence.
- How do these affect leadership and management practice? Describe the implications.
- What is cultural diversity? What other kinds of diversity often appear in workplaces? (race, religion, etc.)
- Describe the characteristics of each of the following key areas of diversity in Australia:
- culture / language
- race / ethnicity
- disability
- religious or spiritual beliefs
- gender
- generational culture
- sexual orientation or identity: lesbian, gay, bisexual, heterosexual, transgender, and intersex.
- How do they affect different areas of work and life?
- Describe the role of leaders and managers in encouraging diversity in work practices and service delivery.
- Describe the effect of diversity practices and experiences on personal behaviour. (In your answer, consider interpersonal relationships, perception and social expectations of oneself and others.)

- discrimination (direct and indirect) based on age,disability, race, gender.

- Describe three different strategies for communicating with someone from another culture. How can they be integrated into workplace practices?

Detailed requirements
1. Research diversity in the workplace El 1/PC, RS
- Collect and evaluate quantitative and qualitative workplace diversity data
- Identify and analyse potential benefits of diversity in relation to the workplace objectives
- Analyse how current diversity practice matches workplace objectives
2. Foster diversity El 2/PC, RS
- Show respect for diversity by:
- by being an example for others.
- in the way you develop work practices and do planning.
- Generate a supportive workplace by valuing and promoting:
- the benefits of a diverse workforce to workers according to relevant policy.
- collaboration and the experience of working with diverse clients and colleagues.
- Help and coach colleagues to accept diversity in both colleagues and clients.
- Identify and adapt professional development opportunities to address the needs of a diverse workforce.
- Identify and use diversity factors of clients and colleagues to address diversity objectives of the workplace.
3. Adapt communication strategies El 3/PC, RS
- Use tailored communication to meet the diverse needs of individuals for targeted individual and group needs.
- Identify and/or develop and use resources that help you communicate more effectively in the workplace.

Alternative assessments
These two assignments are alternatives for classroom (non-RPL) students.
Assignment 1
Write a research paper of four pages on diversity in your workplace. El 1/PC
- Collect and evaluate staff quantitative data
- Count the staff who fit a "diversity" group: Non-native speakers of English, ethnic minority, disabled, etc.
- What percentage of your staff fit a diversity group?
- Make a graph of ages with the number of staff in each ten-year age bracket.
- What does your graph of staff age profiles tell you?
- Collect and evaluate client quantitative data
- Count the clients who fit a "diversity" group: Non-native speakers of English, ethnic minority, disabled, etc.
- What percentage of clients fit a diversity group?
- Make a graph of ages with the number of clients in each ten-year age bracket.
- What does your graph of client age profiles tell you?
- Collect and evaluate client qualitative data
- Describe current diversity practices in your workplace. To what extent are they intentional?
- Write a questionnaire of betwen five and ten open-ended questions to find out staff views on diversity issues. Then adapt it for use with clients.
- Get your supervisor to check your questionnaire, to make sure all questions are clear and unambiguous.
- Collect data on both staff and client views on diversity issues.
- Analyze your data
- Which workplace objectives are relevant to diversity?
- Does your workplace have any specific diversity objectives? If so, describe them briefly.
- What are the potential benefits of diversity in relation to the workplace objectives? Explain your conclusions.
- To what extent does current diversity practice match workplace objectives? Explain your conclusions.
- To what extent is current diversity performance effective in meeting diversity objectives? Explain your conclusions.
Assignment 2: Develop policy and procedures El 4/PC
Work together as a team to revise or write a set of draft policies and procedures on workplace diversity. Make a list of stakeholders, including staff, clients, and people from key target groups and consult them. Based on your consultation, put your draft policies into writing.
Decide how you will measure the effectiveness of your diversity policies and procedures, and include them in your draft.
Present your draft to your staff meeting, board, or leadership group. (That is, the decision-makers or whoever is above you in your organization’s structure.) In your presentation, advocate for the use of diversity strategies.
If the decision-makers require changes, revise your draft and submit it again.
