CHCMGT003 Lead the work team
This unit is about supervising and coordinating team activities in health and community service organizations. These workers are team leaders or managers responsible for coordinating and monitoring the activities and performance of work teams and other service providers.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation on the job
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical
You will be assessed in the workplace. You need to show that you have:
- Developed at least one plan for a team or group of individuals. The plan needs to include:
- effective procedures and strategies to maximize staff work performance and results.
- strategies for collaboration and cooperative work practices.
- identified barriers and constraints, and your strategies to address them.
- Led at least two group meetings to delegate team activities and to develop and evaluate work goals.
- Identified at least one issue that disrupts to team activities and:
- led at least one meeting or discussion with those involved.
- developed and implemented strategies to resolve issue.
- Reviewed the performance of at least one individual and given coaching.

Detailed requirements
1. Contribute to effective work practices and promote them.
- Develop plans for the day to day activities of the work group and implement them.
- Develop and implement strategies in consultation with other people to maximize performance and results.
- Identify planning problems, barriers and constraints and develop and address them.
2. Develop and implement staffing processes
- Keep staff processes confidential. (Follow your organization’s policies and procedures.)
- Identify staffing and resourcing needs and make plans to address them.
- Participate in recruitment processes.
- Give effective induction and ongoing support for new and existing staff.
- Give staff instruction and extra support as required so that they can improve the quality of their work and get better results for their clients.
- Encourage staff to do further training and development so that they can achieve workplace results and their personal goals, and help them to do so.
- Collaborate with other service providers as needed to meet service and referral needs.
3. Maintain a professional approach to leading the team
- Reflect on your practice and pro-actively update your knowledge and skills.
- Align your leadership practice with the organization’s values, ethical guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Take reasonable steps to make sure that personal or social contact does not negatively affect your ability to lead the team.
4. Promote effective workplace relations
- Implement collaborative, cooperative work practices and maintain positive relationships with staff and management.
- Be an example of effective communication in the workplace, including open discussion and active listening, and encourage others to communicate effectively.
- Identify potential and actual conflicts and implement appropriate approaches to prevent or address them.
- Throughout conflict resolutions, make sure the parties have access to appropriate support, mediation and debriefing within organization guidelines.
- Resolve problems that could disrupt team activities.
5. Evaluate plans
- Meet regularly with those involved to discuss and evaluate whether plans and practices are effectively in meeting the goals and needs of the organization.
- Identify areas for improvement.
- Revise plans and practices to ensure you continue improve.
- Document and report work outcomes according to organizational procedures.
6. Review individual performance
- Follow performance management processes and document the results (according to your role and your organization’s procedures).
- Monitor and evaluate staff performance and regularly give them ongoing feedback.
- Identify poor performance and take necessary actions according to your role and your organization’s procedures.
- Monitor and coach individuals to improve their performance.
- Identify the need for extra support and give it (or refer them ) when required, according to your role and your organization’sprocedures.
