CHCPRP003 Reflect on and improve own professional practice
This unit is about evaluating and improving your own practice through reflection and ongoing professional development (PD). PD opportunities are usually available through industry networks, professional associations, online forums, and informal and formal ways of learning and developing.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation on the job
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical
You will be assessed in the workplace.
- Keep a diary over the assessment period to reflect on and improve your own practice.
- Write a personal development plan that includes goals, timeframes, and ways of measuring progress.
Show your assessor your personal development plan. Explain how it works as you go. Your assessor may ask you any questions on how it works.
Interview/assignment questions
- What are the legal and legal and ethical considerations for reviewing and improving your own practice. In your answer, include:
- codes of practice,
- duty of care,
- rights and responsibilities of workers and employers,
- work role boundaries – responsibilities and limitations.
- Explain three different models and processes for professional reflection.
- What professional development opportunities are available to you?
- Explain how to:
- Create a personal development plan.
- Set personal goals.
- Set realistic timeframes.
- Measure progress and performance.
- Explain three different kinds of work methods and practices that can improve performance.
- Explain four learning styles and how they relate to different individuals.

Detailed requirements
1. Reflect on your own practice
- Evaluate yourself in conjunction with your supervisors and/or peers.
- Reflect on and recognize the effect of values, beliefs and behaviour in practice.
- Share two-way, open and evaluative feedback with co-workers or peers.
- Actively ask for and reflect on feedback from clients, organizations or other relevant sources.
2. Improve your own practice
- Determine improvements needed based on own evaluation and feedback from others.
- Identify potential support networks both internal and external to the organization.
- Ask for specialist advice or further training where need is identified.
- Recognize requirements for self-care and identify requirements for additional support.
- Devise, document and implement a self development plan that sets realistic goals and targets.
3. Take some kind of ongoing professional development
- Access and review information on current and emerging industry developments and use these to improve practice.
- Assess and confirm your practice against ethical and legal requirements and opportunities.
- Identify and engage with opportunities to extend and expand own expertise.
- Regularly participate in reviews as a commitment to upgrading your skills and knowledge.
4. Other.
- Manage tasks and contingencies on the job.
- Follow Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards, and industry codes of practice.
