CUAWHS302 Apply work health and safety practices
This unit is about following work health and safety (WHS) requirements in the creative industries. It applies to those who are required to identify their individual WHS responsibilities and implement procedures to work safely in various creative industry work contexts.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation on the job
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. procedures)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical
You will be assessed in the workplace as a safe environment with access to workplace instructions and information relating to safe work practices, case studies (and, where possible, real situations) and interaction with others.
You need to show that you have done the following:
- Consistently performed typical creative arts activities.
- Complete work tasks according to work health and safety (WHS) legislative and workplace requirements, including:
- Correctly using personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Following safety signs and symbols.
- Communicating WHS issues to your supervisor.
- Participate in consultation about WHS issues.
- Identify and report hazards according to workplace requirements.
- Assess and control risks, and document risk control measures according to your level of responsibility.
- Follow procedures for responding to incidents and emergencies.
Interview/assignment questions
- Describe in outline the WHS rights and responsibilities that apply to your role.
- Explain the term ‘duty of care’.
- Describe typical health and safety roles in your workplace.
- List and describe common safety signs and symbols.
- Explain procedures for reporting:
- Hazards and risks,
- Incidents and accidents.
- Identify and describe common hazards.
- What are the major causes of accidents in your kind of workplace?
- Explain what the term ‘risk control’ means.
- Make a list potential emergency situations in your workplace. Describe each one and how to respond to it.

Detailed requirements
1. Implement safe work practices.
- Develop and maintain your knowledge of WHS legislation, codes of practice and workplace policies and procedures.
- Interpret legislative requirements, safety documentation and signage, and apply it to your work.
- Comply with duty of care requirements.
- Use personal protective equipment and other measures as required to prevent injury or impairment.
- Use tools, equipment and materials according to safe work practices.
- Contribute to WHS consultative activities.
- Raise WHS issue with relevant personnel.
2. Participate in hazard identification and risk assessment and control.
- Identify and report workplace hazards and WHS issues to relevant personnel.
- Assess and control risks according to your level of responsibility, in line with workplace procedures.
- Document risk control actions as required.
- Contribute to reporting workplace WHS, hazard, accident and incident reports as required.
3. Follow emergency procedures.
- Report emergencies and incidents promptly to relevant personnel or authorities, according to workplace procedures.
- Deal with emergencies in line with your level of responsibility.
- Implement evacuation procedures as required.
3. Other.
- Manage tasks and contingencies on the job.
- Follow Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards, and industry codes of practice.
