HLTWHS003 Maintain work health and safety
This unit is about implementing and monitoring work health and safety (WHS) policies, procedures and work practices as part of a small work team. It applies to workers who have a key role in maintaining WHS in an organization, including duty of care for other workers.
How you will be assessed
You will be assessed through:
- Assessor observation on the job
- Supervisor reference (if the assessor is not the supervisor)
- Review of your workplace documents (e.g. risk assessment report, incident report)
- Interview/assignment based on the requirements below.
Practical

You will be assessed in the workplace. (However, you will be assessed through scenarios or realistic simulations if your workplace does not have the full range of contexts and situations. For example, emergencies might occur only rarely or would be unsafe or impractical to use for assessments. Simulations will have all the relevant workplace equipment and resources.)
Show your assessor around your workplace and the forms and procedures for doing assessment. Explain how it works as you go. Your assessor may ask you any questions on how it works.
You need to do the following tasks at least once according to state/territory WHS regulations, relevant codes of practice and workplace procedures:
- Do a workplace risk assessment and record the results, including:
- Identify hazards,
- Assess risks,
- Give strategies for minimizing risk, and
- Analyze residual risk.
- Give WHS information to at least two workers, including:
- Explain WHS policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate safe housekeeping practices.
- Correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Consistently monitor safety procedures in day-to-day work required by the job role.
- Complete an incident report.
- Follow procedures for a real or simulated emergency.

- What are the rights and responsibilities of persons conducting a business or undertaking (PCBUs), officers and workers? Include duty of care in your answer.
- Explain the legislative requirements for record-keeping and reporting.
- Explain the regulatory requirements relevant to your particular industry/type of work site.
- Which manual tasks are hazardous? For each one, how do you prevent injury?
- What are your procedures for infection control?
- What hazards are common in your work environment and what harm can they cause?
- Explain:
- How to identify hazards.
- How to assess risk.
- How to assess residual risk.
- How to use risk controls.
- How to use the hierarchy of control.
- What are your organization’s procedures for emergencies?
