Develop understanding of children's interests and developmental needs CHCPR303D

This unit is about gathering information about children in order to address their interests and developmental needs. Your assessor will assign you at least two observation tasks to be done according to the requirements below.

 

Requirements

1. Gather information about the child through observation

  1. Observe children during their normal pattern of play and daily interactions to identify their interests and needs
  2. Monitor strengths and needs of children
  3. Include all aspects of the child's development

 

2. Gather information about the child from secondary sources

  1. Use child records to collect information about each child
  2. Use information exchange with family to collect information about each child's needs interests and cultural practices

 

3. Record observations appropriately

  1. Discuss your collected information with relevant people and/or record it according to requirements
  2. When discussing or recording of information about children, don't make biased comments and give anyone negative labels
  3. Ensure observations are recorded carefully and accurately
  4. Write reports

 

4. Use the information that you collected to understand the child and contribute to program planning:

  1. Suggest ways to improve children's play and physical activity to help develop fundamental movement skills and leisure
  2. Ensure interactions with the child meet their individual requirements

 

5. Other skills

  1. Treat all parents and children equitably, including Indigenous people
  2. Work with cultural diversity
  3. Interact well with people at an interpersonal level.

 

Your scope for observations must include all aspects of the child's development listed above, and must vary according to children's ages as follows:

Babies and toddlers

3 to 5 year olds

6 to 12 year olds

Interview/Assignment

  1. Write list of age groups for children aged 0 to 12 years. For each age group, list and describe the characteristics of their physical development and movement milestones.
  2. Write a summary of your organization's standards, policies and procedures.
