Planks and A-frames are high risk and need close supervision, as at this age children are still developing their balancing skills. Always ensure there is a soft fall for equipment set up higher then 30 cm. Position them away from any potential hazards that could be harmful if the child falls. Ensure that the outdoor play equipment at the centre does not pose a hazard to the children because of the design, manufacture or the way that they are set-up.
Swings which have safety belts need medium supervision - not so much for the child in the swing, but for those children walking past who may not have noticed the swing and are at risk of being hit by it.
You also need to be aware of children who have finished swinging, so that you can assist them to get off the swing without falling or hurting themselves. Pushing the swing provides a great opportunity to interact positively with the child.
Wheel toys are low risk areas. However, be aware that children who are just beginning to walk will need assistance.
The carer's swing chair is a high risk area, and children should always be accompanied by an adult when on the swing chair.
The sandpit is a very high risk area for non-walking babies. For this age group close supervision, such as sitting with the baby, is needed to prevent them from falling forward into the sand and suffocating.
For babies who are walking, you still need to remain close by and keep a good eye on them.
An obstacle course is an area of medium risk. However, close supervision is needed as children may become frightened, stuck or need assistance in some way. The bridge section of the obstacle course should be supervised closely, particularly to direct children to cross the bridge without falling or climbing over the sides.
