Susan: Good morning Eliza. Hi Hilda. How are you both today?
Eliza: (Cries out in an unhappy way).
Susan: Maybe we'd better let you get settled first.
Susan: Hilda, what kind of routines does Eliza usually follow at home? Does she usually eat at certain times of the day?
Hilda: Well, she has breakfast about 6.00 am, then she usually likes to have a snack about 10.00 am and is ready for lunch around 12.00 pm. I usually give her a snack during the afternoon, some fruit or yoghurt, she likes those and then we usually feed her dinner about 6.00 pm.
Susan: And does she usually nap during the afternoon?
Hilda: Yes, she likes to sleep after lunch, usually for about two hours, then she's up and full of energy again. She likes to have her blanket to sleep with, she calls it 'banky' and she usually gets read a story before she goes to sleep at home.
Susan: Great, thanks. It helps us a lot to have this kind of information. Then we can try to keep Eliza's routine the same as it usually is at home. It will help Eliza feel more comfortable here and less distressed about being in a new place with unfamiliar people.
Susan: Do you like playing with blocks Eliza? Here we've got some nice, brightly coloured blocks, do you think we could make something out of them?
Susan: You'll have lots of fun here Eliza. You don't need mummy here to have fun at day care, do you? Let's build a big castle together, and see how high we can make it.
