The Supernatural and Religion

It may be extremely difficult for us to separate this area of the supernatural from other areas of their lives. The reason is that many tribal people don't make the divisions where we do, and very often look at man, nature, and the supernatural as one single whole. In our culture we have separated these areas almost to the point we find it hard to see any connection between the natural and the super-natural. They believe differently - your thought may influence how the trees grow - good crops are the result of the ceremony performed.

For example, the Ainu people of Japan insist that man is no different from animals, plants or even some totally inanimate objects, since all such subjects have souls.

Some Indians in the Amazon believe that eating the heart of a certain animal makes it possible for him to acquire the courage and character of that animal. They do not regard themselves simply as animals though, but take means to show this by removing all body hair.

Anuak, Sudan - They believe that /jwok/ which refers to all that's supernatural includes god the creator, evil spirits, family shrines, medicine men, white men, airplanes, anything startling.

Religion is characterized by a belief in, and an emotional attitude toward a supernatural being or beings. There is communion (through ritual, etc.) and man is subject to the spirit or beings.
