Positive caregiving
Did you know?
You can make routine activities into opportunities for positive interactions.
There are many opportunities for positive interactions between the caregiver and the child while you are carrying out their individual routines of physical care, such as nappy changing, feeding, sleep time and any other times where you are providing care, rest, play or exercise.
While you're doing everyday things, like changing a nappy, it's a great chance to be able to interact with the child you're caring for and spend some time with them. Just because you're doing something routine, doesn't mean that you can't make it fun or use it as an opportunity to talk to the child, play with them, sing a song, or interact in some way.
Have a look at the section of video of a caregiver as she finishes changing baby Jack's nappy. Have a look at how she's interacting with Jack and letting him know what she's going to do, as well as getting down to his level as she communicates with him.
Now it's your turn to have a think about how you can use these sorts of caregiving strategies when you're caring for children.
Think about ways you can make routine activities into opportunities for positive interactions.
In your Resource File, add at least six new entries describing ways that you can interact with a child while you are participating in routines of physical care, such as nappy changing, feeding, sleep time and any other times where you are providing care, rest, play or exercise.
You can find a blank Resource File in the Forms section of the Cybertots Intranet.
