Hand washing is the most effective way to minimise the spread of infection.

Handwashing is something we can all do to help maintain high standards of cleanliness and keep the children at Cybertots healthy. You’ve been washing your hands all your life, but do you really know how to do it properly? Click on

Look at this hand washing poster. In your notebook, write a list of 5 places this poster could be displayed in a child care centre to remind staff about hand washing.

Supporting children’s hygiene

Children should be supported to learn hygiene practices appropriate to their age and abilities. We can help them do this by:

clearly showing or explaining what to do
making it easy for them (providing the right equipment)
encouraging, reminding and praising
modelling the practices ourselves.

In your notebook, write down some ways you could help children in your care to learn about and follow good hygiene practices.

Think of at least two suggestions for each age group (babies, toddlers, 2 – 3 yr olds, 3 – 5 yr olds, 6yrs+). You could check the Policies on the Cybertots Intranet, search the internet, or discuss with other learners.
