Exercise

Did you know?

A well-balanced lifestyle includes good nutrition, physical exercise and fun!

In addition to healthy eating, exercise is really important. Physical fitness is important for developing cognitive skills, and lack of fitness in childhood can be linked to health issues in later life.

In order to encourage children to develop a positive self image which is linked closely with self esteem, we can help children to understand the relationship between physical activity and good health. In addition to discussing good nutrition with children, we can encourage a positive attitude towards physical exercise.

As a caregiver it is your responsibility to introduce children in your care to physical activity, and explain to them why it is important. Another way to develop childrens' interest in food is by growing herbs or vegetables in a garden patch. This is a very powerful way to show children where food comes from and how it is made. Children are more likely to taste and try new foods if they are involved in watching it grow.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare has reports on a number of health issues, on their website at www.aihw.gov.au. On the site, search for children and fitness, and read some of the reports written on Australian children’s level of fitness and rising rates of obesity.

Consider what this means for you as a child care provider. Write your thoughts in your notebook.
