Encouraging independence

Text Alternative

Do you remember when you were a child and didn't know how to do things that you now take for granted? Things like tying your shoelaces or getting dressed in the morning.

To encourage children to develop self-help skills you should remember the following.

  1. provide an environment that encourages learning
  2. know when to help
  3. explain and demonstrate the steps involved in completing the task
  4. encourage the child as they are learning new skills
  5. provide opportunities for practice.

It's really important to remember that all children are different and each individual will require different levels of assistance and encouragement as they develop their independence.
