Common self-help milestones
All children develop differently. Below are age groups and some self-help milestones commonly achieved. Remember, not all children will achieve skills at the same age/s.
0 – 12 months
- feeds self a biscuit
- holds cup with two hands; drinks with assistance
- holds out arms and legs while being dressed.
1 – 2 years
- uses a spoon with little spillage
- drinks from a cup unassisted
- chews food
- removes shoes, socks, pants
- starting to indicate toilet needs
- seats self in child size chair.
2 – 3 years
- uses spoon
- opens door by turning the handle
- takes off coat
- puts on coat with assistance.
3 – 4 years
- pours well from small jug
- can spread butter with knife
- can undo and do up large buttons
- washes and dries hands unassisted.
4 – 5 years
- cuts easy food with a knife eg, hamburger patty.
5 – 6 years
- dresses self completely
- can generally tie shoe laces.
