Building self-help skills: sleep/rest time

Sleep time ensures that children get the rest they need during their active day in child care. Even if the children only rest, this can serve as a break from the noise and exctiement of the group. They can either rest quietly on a beanbag or mattress or read a book quietly in the book corner.

It is important to recognise that children have different sleep patterns and that you have to accommodate their needs accordingly.

The time set aside for sleep or rest is another opportunity for you to develop and practice self-help behaviours in children. Children can participate in sleep time routines by:
